Windows Virtual Desktop is a comprehensive desktop and app virtualization service running in the cloud. It’s the only virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) that delivers simplified management, multi-session Windows 10, optimizations for Office 365 ProPlus, and support for Remote Desktop Services (RDS) environments. Deploy and scale your Windows desktops and apps on Azure in minutes, and get built-in security and compliance features.

On the Azure side, WVD supports Windows 10 multi-session, Windows 10 single-session, Windows 7 single-session, and Windows Server 2012 R2 and newer operating systems.

On the client side (end-user device), WVD supports all modern, internet-connected devices such as PCs, Macs, iOS, Android and any device with an HTML5 browser.

  • Set up a multi-session Windows 10 deployment that delivers a full Windows 10 with scalability
  • Virtualize Office 365 ProPlus and optimize it to run in multi-user virtual scenarios
  • Provide Windows 7 virtual desktops with free Extended Security Updates
  • Bring your existing Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and Windows Server desktops and apps to any computer
  • Virtualize both desktops and apps
  • Manage Windows 10, Windows Server, and Windows 7 desktops and apps with a unified management experience

Windows Virtual Desktop can be accessed from any modern, internet-connected device no matter what operating system it uses.  It can be accessed using an installed Remote Desktop client app.  This app is available for Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android.

Windows Virtual Desktop allows IT pros and MSPs to create virtual desktops and RemoteApps in Azure and publish them to users who can access them from their own devices.

Session virtualization is a technology that allows the same Azure virtual machine to be used by multiple users concurrently, each for their own desktop session.  This is in contract to VDI or personal desktops where each user gets his or her own dedicated Azure virtual machine to use as the desktop.  Session virtualization is a good way to increase “user density” and reduce costs

There are two cost components to WVD:  Microsoft License and Azure infrastructure.

Microsoft License – Windows Virtual Desktop is an entitlement of a Windows 10 subscription license.  This license can be purchased as part of Microsoft 365 Business/E3/E5/A3/A5 or as a standalone subscription (e.g. Windows 10 Enterprise E3).  If you already own one of these licenses there is no additional cost to use WVD from a software perspective.

Azure Infrastructure – The cost of all these components will include the virtual machines (compute), storage (disks and files), networking (egress bandwidth), etc.  The precise cost will depend on the number of users, amount of storage per user, how many and what types of applications the users use and many other factors.

There are not.  License cost is per-user and is the same no matter what type of desktop you’re using.  The cost of Azure infrastructure to run the virtual desktops varies based on what types of desktops you want to deploy.  It is very flexible.

To run Windows Virtual Desktop, you'll need a Windows 10 subscription license and an Azure environment with all the prerequisites met.

WVD can only be used in Azure and not for on-premises or other cloud deployments.  It also requires a subscription to Windows 10 Enterprise.  This must be a subscription and not a perpetual Windows 10 license.

Getting started

You don't need to install anything in order to use Office 365. To help you easily connect your desktop version of the latest version of Office, Office 2010, or Office 2007 to Office 365, Microsoft provides Office 365 customers an installable piece of software—called “Office Desktop Setup”—at no charge. Office Desktop Setup provides many benefits, including: - Automatically detecting necessary updates. - Installing updates and components upon approval or silently from a command line. - Automatically configuring Outlook and Microsoft Skype for Business for use with Microsoft Office 365. - Uninstalling itself from the client computer after running. You can find and install Office Desktop Setup in your Office 365 administration center. If your plan includes a subscription to Office, you will also be able to install that directly from the Office 365 administration center.

You can add the domain name you own to Office 365 to create domain-based email addresses. Find your domain registrar or DNS hosting provider. Compare domain management in Office 365 subscriptions.

Yes. If you purchase Office 365 licenses for the accounts you create during your free trial, the information and configuration for these users' accounts will remain intact. Once your free trial expires, you won't be able to continue using Office 365 for free. You will have an additional 30 days to purchase Office 365 before your account information is erased. Once your trial account information has been erased, it cannot be retrieved.

Office 365 Setup provides step-by-step guidance. In just a few quick steps you can sign up for Office 365, set up your organization's domain name and add user accounts, install Office, and move your existing email to Office 365.

Office 365 Business, Business Essentials, and Business Premium support Windows Vista and Windows XP for most web-based functionality. However, they do not support the download and use of the latest version of Office software, and you cannot substitute Office 2010 for the latest version. You can connect your existing Office 2010 or Office 2007 software to the Office 365 service, but if you are running Windows Vista or Windows XP, you cannot install Office 365 Business, Business Essentials, and Business Premium software, and you cannot replace Office 365 Business, Business Essentials, or Business Premium software with a download of Office 2010.
